The
weekly art classes are based upon the European Classical
tradition and designed for students who want the
benefits of intensive workshops combined with the
continuity, momentum and progressive, long-term
development of a weekly program. They also enjoy
the comraderie and experience of painting with other
artists working towards similar goals. 
|
| The
weekly demonstrations and painting projects teach
the foundations of European Classical through Nineteenth-century
painting--Classicism, Baroque, Rococo, Realism,
Naturalism, French and American Impressionism and
Tonalism; and the skills to paint nude and clothed
figures, portraits, children, still lifes, street
scenes, landscapes and gardens. Craig Srebnik demonstrates
and explains concepts,
principles and techniques, followed by individual
instruction as the students apply the lessons to
their own artwork. He gives students the understanding
and skills to develop their own vision and artistic
voice by passing on "Secrets of the Masters"--gained
from his research in the U.S., Europe and from his
own painting experience.

so, you need to understand the skeleton and
musculature; the characteristic structure
of the figure; how the body moves and its
effects; a proportional system; and the underlying
unity and beauty of the human figure. |

program introduces the skeleton,
musculature and superficial anatomy; the three-dimensional
structure, forms and planes of the figure;
the mechanics of the body and its machine-like
movement (the skeleton, joints and muscles
acting as levers, pulleys, fulcrums, relays,
etc.); the effects of muscular action and
movement; a Classical proportional system
and aesthetic principles; and how the anatomy
and structure relate to figure drawing, painting and sculpture. |

The
demonstrations and projects introduce and
explore the concepts, principles, thinking,
values, philosophies, techniques and methods
of Classical through Nineteenth century
Masters and how to achieve similar results. The
studies are designed to understand and emulate
their art and assimilate their lessons into
one's own work. The program includes the
chiaroscuro, and timeless ideal beauty,
contours, form and space of Sixteenth century
Italian Classical art; the Platonic perfection
of Raphael; Michelangelo's organic, Romantic
creations that burst with the force of Nature;
the dramatic lighting of Tenebrism; the
sumptuous balance of Classicism and Naturalism
of the Venetians; the vitality of the Baroque;
the expressive paint handling and rendering
of Rembrandt, and the climactic lighting
that seems to emanate from the very souls
of his subjects; the delightful vision offered
by Vermeer and other Dutch Masters, their
composition, jewel-like rendering and moments
that seem to exist in eternity; the virtuoso
orchestration of Boucher, Fragonard and
other Rococo artists; Bouguereau's unparalleled
naturalistic skin tones, enveloped in his
distinctive diffused arcadian light and
atmosphere; Sargent's characteristic blast
of dazzling light, background elements suggested
with a variety of warm and cool highlights,
and his application of rich, luscious paint
gliding effortlessly over forms withlong,
sinuous brushstrokes; and the descriptive
silhouettes and subtle tonal harmonies of
the Boston and tonalist painters.

structure; two-dimensional design and integration; special concerns related to figure composition; aesthetic considerations; learning from the Masters and other artists; painting concepts and how they influence composition; and developing one's own compositions. |

This is a foundation course for portrait and figure draughtsmen, painters and sculptures. The program introduces monochrome and multi-color rendering in dry media and paint; various techniques for using the media; proportional systems, the basic structure, anatomy and features of men, women and children; movement, drapery and clothing; learning from drawing, painting and sculpture Masters; cast drawing and working from nature; and how to apply drawing lessons to painting and sculpture.
Like the Anatomy program, this class will help anyone who wants to master portraits and the figure. |
