"My sinuous, romantic figures are reminiscent of the timeless beauty of Classical and Baroque Masters, combined with the light, atmosphere and expressive brushwork of contemporary Impressionists--'a painterly, Classical Naturalism'."

Painting Procedure

Before working with the model, Craig Srebnik develops poses from his imagination and principles of composition. His poses generally include s-curves and spirals--as the line of nature and beauty: the shape of leaves and stems, the lines created by muscles spiraling and alternating along the sides of the skeleton, the movement of ocean waves, the swimming of fish, the flapping of birds' wings in slow motion, and the waves of grass in the wind. Spiraling the figure accentuates the s-curves of the figure, its musculature, and the vitality of the pose. Together, they emphasize Srebnik's concept of the beauty of the figure. Light and shadow is added to the compositional drawings to dramatize the compositions, which may also be enhanced with drapery or clothing.

"The nature of beauty is revealed through the study of nature."

A small oil compositional study may precede the full-sized painting to better orchestrate the lines, shapes, tones and colors of the figure and background. Sometimes, Srebnik sets up a skeleton in the pose to draw it and the musculature before painting from the model.

While painting, the model becomes a reference for the structure, anatomy, muscular tension, effects of light and how the drapery lies. Interpreting the figure according to principles of beauty and art: balance, movement, proportion, harmony, rhythm and composition produces a cumulative effect that is different than the original scene.
